The BMW M Bike Carbon Racer is BMW’s first racing bicycle made of full carbon. Why did BMW decide to design and develop this bike?
Firstly, BMW – and especially the BMW M Series – stands for speed and driving pleasure, which is why a racing M Bike fits perfectly into the product range of BMW Bikes. Secondly, in the automotive and aviation industries full carbon is setting new standards in terms of speed and strength/rigidity, and is therefore the perfect material for a modern racing bike. For sophisticated racing bikes, full carbon frames have become standard.

For what kind of racing bike enthusiast has it been developed?
The BMW M Bike Carbon Racer is the ideal racing bike for the athletic hobby cyclist. We offer five alternative frame sizes – because a racing bike must fit its rider perfectly, like a tailor-made suit. In developing the racing bike, the choice of the individual components was made with the following in mind: many years of riding pleasure, reliability and a lightweight construction offering excellent value for money. BMW not only puts a lot of emphasis on a lightweight construction but also on reliability and value for money. Different3 standards apply to professional cyclists, which is why the BMW M Bike is the ideal racing bike for the target group of athletic hobby cyclists.

Who are the main competitors in this segment?
All reputable racing bike manufacturers – for example Bianchi, Trek, etc. – offer models with full carbon frames and a Shimano Ultegra groupset, which is also standard on the BMW M Bike.

How does the price of the Carbon Racer compare to the competition?
The price for the BMW M Bike is similar to other bikes in the same class with comparable fittings/parts made by other renowned and reputable manufacturers. BMW’s pricing is very competitive.

According to what criteria are the components selected?
The M Bike has been designed specifically for the enthusiastic hobby rider and not for the racing professional. The overall concept of the components is a harmonious combination of aesthetic and functional aspects. However, if the racing bike is to be used for semi-professional purposes, the standard wheels can be adapted with professional tyres. Very unusual for a racing bike are the pedals we deliver it with, which serve for test rides and the like at the BMW dealership. Customers can exchange these later on for a system that perfectly fits their cycling shoes. Customers can thus test-ride the bike wearing normal shoes. The pedals that the bike is originally delivered with can also be turned around to use with cycling shoes that have a click-in mechanism. Wellgo is the manufacturer of these pedals and the product code is R120. All common cycling shoes can be used with these because the necessary adapter plates are included as standard with the pedals. The full carbon frame and front forks are made by one of the leading specialist manufacturers on the market.

Why did you choose Shimano and not, for example, Ultegra?
Shimano is market leader for bicycle components, offers high-quality groupsets for racing bikes and has long been recognised as a solid performer as well as the most renowned manufacturer of bicycle components. With the Shimano Ultegra groupset, we have chosen a modern, easy-to-use, high-quality product. Combined with the selected wheels and the frame, it offers optimal cycling comfort. We deliberately didn’t select the highest quality groupset (Shimano’s Dura Ace) available because the weight advantage is minimal compared to the price difference for the customer, which would have been clearly felt.

The frame is the centrepiece of each and every bicycle. What was especially important in the choice of the frame for the BMW M Bike Carbon Racer?
Due to the full carbon frame, we were able to achieve a very low final weight combined with high durability and torsional stability. No deficiencies were found during the endurance trials, carried out with above-average load spectra by independent test institutes. High-quality standards characterise all BMW bicycles.

Where is the bike made?
The components come from the workshops of leading international manufacturers in Taiwan and Japan, for example. Our manufacturer produces its frames in Taiwan and Vietnam and guarantees the highest quality worldwide. The Shimano components come mainly from Japan. The Winora Group, our long-standing partner, assembles the final product and carries out the quality control in Germany.

Why aren’t all components (seat post, handlebars, handlebar stem) made of full carbon?
We could optimise the weight even further in this way but at the cost of user-friendliness and ease of maintenance for the customer – and it would also considerably increase the price. However, it is very important for BMW to be able to offer the BMW M Bike Carbon Racer at a reasonable price, offering excellent value for money.

Do I have to pay special attention to anything during everyday use? Care instructions for the full carbon frame/fork?
Included with every bike is a comprehensive user’s manual containing all the important information about bicycle handling and service. There are some special basic rules for full carbon, which are also mentioned in detail in the user’s guide. Full carbon is an extremely strong material that makes it possible to combine two factors in one component: low weight and high strength. However, full carbon elements can become deformed if overloaded, which is neither necessarily permanent nor even visible even if the inner fibre structure has already been damaged. After having been overloaded, a then-damaged full carbon part can fail during further use – both suddenly and without warning – causing a possible accident with an unknown, possibly serious outcome. For this reason, after any kind of accident (e.g. a fall) the complete BMW M Carbon Bike must be checked by a BMW authorised dealer or a reliable bicycle specialist.

How is the ideal frame height calculated, and how can the customer do this? For the other bikes, we just have sizes S–L; for the M Bike, we use the standard frame sizes.
The right size for a racing bike can be calculated using a simple formula: multiply the inner-leg length by 0.665. The result is the theoretical height of the frame in cm. Important: the result refers to the German way of measuring in cm! If the theoretical value falls between two sizes, the following rule of thumb can be applied: for competition-orientated racing, the smaller size is recommended, for sport- and fitness-orientated cycling, the larger size. The following table shows the general relationship between the correct frame height and the size of the cyclist:

165–170 cm 51–53 cm 170–175 cm 53–55 cm 175–180 cm 55–57 cm 180–185 cm 57–60 cm 185–190 cm 60–62 cm
